Community journalism at its finest
Award-winning, employee-owned, state-of-the-art community weeklies, nationally known for their quality, seek an energetic, enterprising reporter to cover government or possibly sports a couple of days a week and spend the rest of the week coming up with original, people-focused local features and eye-catching, content-laden photos.
Located between two recreational lakes on the edge of the scenic Flint Hills in east-central Kansas, we're based in a dynamic county-seat community with outstanding performing arts, sports, recreation, library and medical facilities and a keen sense of historical preservation. We also cover a nearby, rapidly growing, economically vibrant community that is home to a small Christian college and proud of its close-knit, conservative religious heritage.
This is not a slow-paced, stop-gap job for a burned-out clock-watcher. You will be a vital part of a team of nine full- and part-time journalists working out of three offices. The length of your resume and extent of your professional experience are far less significant than your commitment to excellence in compelling, people-oriented community journalism. Recent graduates and those with limited experience but high degrees of dedication are welcome. We hope you will want to spend your career here, but if you don't, we pride ourselves on having served as a starting point for many fine journalistic careers and will happily give you an opportunity to develop in-depth material and showcase clips.
Salary around $22,000 with a very low cost of living, full health and dental benefits after three months, and potential for substantial year-end performance bonus. Familiarity with Adobe InDesign CS3 and digital color photography would be significant pluses.
Send resume and samples of work, along with names of three professional references, to Susan Berg, managing editor, Marion County Record.
